In December of 2019, I was introduced to the world of silk pillowcases. I never knew just how much a pillowcase could impact my skin, hair, and sleep quality. Since silk is such a delicate material it prevents harsh tugging at the skin and hair throughout the tossing and turning of the night. Friction against a tough fabric is important to avoid since it causes skin wrinkles and hair breakage/loss. Silk pillowcases are said to have anti aging, anti sleep crease, and anti bed head benefits. The slip pillowcase specifically “absorbs significantly less face cream & creates 43% less friction compared to widely available cotton pillowcases with 220-360 thread count” (sourced from slip.com).
I researched all of the silk and satin pillowcases that I could buy, debating whether I should go all out and purchase a $100 pillowcase, or take a risk and try the $20 “knock off” versions made of satin (a synthetic material similar to silk). After reading review after review it seemed that people who had purchased the satin pillowcase were happy…but the people who had tried both satin and pure silk believed that pure silk is the way to go. I ended up purchasing a slip TM brand pure silk pillowcase for $90. You can find this brand at many stores including Slip.com, Sephora, Pottery Barn, West Elm and even discounted at TJ Maxx on a lucky day!
After the first night using my slip silk pillowcase, I FELL IN LOVE. I’ve always had trouble falling asleep at night, but this pillowcase is so incredibly soft and delicate that it helped me fall asleep better than ever before! I have also found that the silk is cooling throughout the night. The slip silk pillowcase can be easily washed on a cold delicate cycle and laid flat to dry. Slip sells their own delicate silk detergent, but you can also use a detergent of your own. I try to use to most neutral pH detergent I have at the time.
I ended up purchasing some slip silk scrunchies as well after loving my pillowcase so much. I originally thought that the scrunchies were a gimmick, but let me tell you, they’re worth the money too. I was lucky and ended up finding a 5 pack of slip midi scrunchies for $15 at TJ Maxx, but they normally retail for $45. These scrunchies not only leave my hair creaseless, they actually hold my hair up during intense workouts…(WIN!). Just like the slip silk pillowcases, the silk scrunchies are made to prevent harsh tugging at the hair. Normal hair elastics can cause severe damage and breakage.
I use both of these products from slip each and every day/night. They offer amazing benefits and are definitely worth the price. I have noticed my hair and skin looking and feeling healthier since I have been using my silk pillowcase and scrunchies.
I wanted to write this blog post to help anyone who is considering buying a silk pillowcase, but is skeptical. Hopefully this helps you weigh the pros and cons! Feel free to comment or email me if you have any questions!
